In which building was the Declaration of Independence adopted in 1776?

The story behind the answer

The Declaration of Independence was adopted in Independence Hall in Philadelphia in 1776. At the time, the building was known as the Pennsylvania State House.

The Second Continental Congress met there while debating independence from Great Britain. The building was later renamed Independence Hall because of its association with the Declaration and other founding events. It is now part of Independence National Historical Park.

The Declaration was adopted on July 4, 1776, after Congress had debated and revised Thomas Jefferson’s draft. The same building later hosted the Constitutional Convention, where delegates signed the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787.

Independence Hall is sometimes confused with nearby Congress Hall, which served as the meeting place of the United States Congress from 1790 to 1800. Federal Hall in New York City was the location of George Washington’s first presidential inauguration in 1789, not the adoption of the Declaration.
