In which building did the 1787 Constitutional Convention meet?

The story behind the answer

The 1787 Constitutional Convention met in Independence Hall.

The building stood in Philadelphia and was then called the Pennsylvania State House. Delegates met there from May 25 to September 17, 1787, to revise the Articles of Confederation. Instead, they produced an entirely new plan of government: the United States Constitution.

Independence Hall is also closely associated with the Declaration of Independence, which Congress adopted there in 1776. The building’s two major founding-era events can cause confusion, but the Declaration and Constitution were created more than a decade apart and addressed different political problems.

The Constitutional Convention included figures such as George Washington, James Madison, Benjamin Franklin, and Alexander Hamilton. Not every delegate signed the final document, but the convention’s work created the federal structure that still governs the United States. Independence Hall is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
