Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps is located in the Belgian municipality of Stavelot.
The circuit sits near the village of Francorchamps in Belgium’s Ardennes region. Its name can cause confusion because Spa, the famous resort town, is nearby but does not contain the circuit. The track’s modern location is officially identified as Stavelot.
Spa-Francorchamps began as a public-road circuit in 1921, linking Francorchamps, Malmedy and Stavelot. The original layout was more than 14 kilometres long and used roads open to ordinary traffic. Safety concerns eventually led to a much shorter permanent circuit, which became the basis of today’s venue.
The track remains one of Formula One’s most recognizable locations. Its 7.004-kilometre Grand Prix layout includes famous sections such as Eau Rouge, Raidillon, Les Combes and Blanchimont. A common mix-up is answering “Spa,” which refers to the nearby town and the circuit’s historic name, rather than the municipality where the facility is located.
