In which Austrian city was Christian Doppler born?

The story behind the answer

Christian Doppler was born in Salzburg, Austria. His birth on 29 November 1803 took place in the historical Electorate of Salzburg, and the city is now one of Austria’s best-known cultural centers.

Doppler came from a Salzburg family connected with the stone-masonry trade. His father was a third-generation stonemason, and Doppler initially showed promise in that family occupation. Because of his fragile health, however, his father encouraged him toward business and academic study instead.

His mathematical ability was recognized by Simon Stampfer, a mathematician in Salzburg. Doppler later studied in Vienna and eventually developed the wave principle that bears his name. Thus Salzburg is both his birthplace and an important part of the story of how a tradesman’s son entered science.

The city is sometimes confused with Vienna because Doppler studied and worked there, or with Prague because he held an important professorship there. Those were later stages of his career; the birthplace answer remains Salzburg.
