Sydney hosts the New Year's Eve celebration featuring fireworks over the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The display also uses the Sydney Opera House and the harbour as major visual landmarks.
Sydney's celebration is internationally prominent partly because Australia reaches midnight earlier than many major cities in Europe and North America. Large crowds gather around the harbour, while boats watch the display from the water and viewing areas fill across the foreshore. The event includes an earlier family fireworks show as well as the main midnight display.
The Harbour Bridge is central to the celebration, but it is not the only launch location: fireworks are also staged from barges and other points around the harbour. The bridge has hosted a variety of visual effects, including illuminated symbols and pyrotechnic installations. Sydney's event is therefore more accurately described as a harbour-wide celebration than as fireworks launched from the bridge alone.
