In which arrondissement of Paris is the Louvre Museum located?

The story behind the answer

The Louvre Museum is located in Paris’s 1st arrondissement.

The 1st arrondissement, also known as the Louvre arrondissement, occupies a central position on the Right Bank of the Seine. It includes the Louvre Palace and much of the adjoining Tuileries Garden, placing several of Paris’s most famous landmarks within the same administrative district.

The museum’s address, 75001 Paris, reflects this arrondissement. The site began as a medieval fortress under Philip II before becoming a royal palace; the French royal collections eventually helped form the museum opened to the public in 1793.

A common mix-up is confusing an arrondissement with a neighborhood or a museum wing. Paris has 20 numbered arrondissements, and the Louvre lies in the first, although parts of the broader historic center extend into neighboring districts. The 1st arrondissement is also associated with the Palais Royal, Les Halles, the Tuileries, and the western end of Île de la Cité.
