In which Argentine rock formation was the giant dinosaur Argentinosaurus found?

Argentinosaurus was found in Argentina’s Huincul Formation. The fossil-bearing rocks lie in Neuquén Province, in the Patagonia region of northwestern Argentina.

The first Argentinosaurus remains were discovered in 1989 after ranch worker Guillermo Heredia reported a large fossil bone near Plaza Huincul. Paleontologists later excavated additional material, and José Bonaparte and Rodolfo Coria formally described the dinosaur in 1993. The species name Argentinosaurus huinculensis honors both Argentina and the Plaza Huincul area.

Argentinosaurus was a titanosaurian sauropod and one of the largest land animals known. Because only fragmentary remains have been recovered, its exact size is uncertain; many estimates place it around 30–35 meters long and roughly 60–80 metric tons. The Huincul Formation dates to the Late Cretaceous, approximately 97–93 million years ago.
