In which 1967 film did Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn make their final film together?

The story behind the answer

The 1967 film in which Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn made their final film together was Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.

Directed and produced by Stanley Kramer, the film stars Tracy and Hepburn as Matt and Christina Drayton, whose daughter plans to marry a Black doctor, played by Sidney Poitier. Its central conflict reflects the racial attitudes and anti-miscegenation laws still present in the United States at the time.

The movie was Tracy and Hepburn’s ninth and final on-screen pairing. Tracy was seriously ill during production, and he completed his work only 17 days before his death in June 1967. The film was released later that year, making his performance his final completed film role. Hepburn never watched the finished movie because of the painful circumstances surrounding Tracy’s death.

The film is sometimes confused with earlier Tracy-Hepburn collaborations such as Adam’s Rib, Woman of the Year, and Pat and Mike. Those were important pairings, but Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner was their last. It was also selected for preservation in the National Film Registry in 2017.
