The Winter Olympics were first held in a different year from the Summer Olympics in 1994.
The change followed an International Olympic Committee decision in 1986 to separate the two Olympic cycles. Before then, both Games were held in the same year, such as the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville and the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.
