In what year was Vogue Japan launched as the magazine’s first Asian edition?

The story behind the answer

Vogue Japan was launched in 1999 as Vogue’s first Asian edition.

The edition brought the Vogue brand to Japan with locally relevant fashion coverage, while retaining the international magazine’s focus on designers, photography, beauty, and culture. Its launch expanded Vogue’s network beyond Europe and the Americas.

Vogue Japan is published in Tokyo and covers Japanese designers alongside major international fashion houses. The edition is commonly distinguished from Vogue Nippon, the title used before the magazine adopted the Vogue Japan name.

The launch is sometimes confused with the start of other Asian Vogue editions. Vogue China began publication in 2005, while Vogue India launched in 2007. Vogue Japan therefore predates both and is the earliest Asian edition in the Vogue family.
