In what year was the Treaty of Versailles signed, formally ending the First World War with Germany?

The story behind the answer

The Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919, formally ending the First World War with Germany.

The treaty was signed on 28 June 1919 in the Hall of Mirrors at the Palace of Versailles near Paris. The date deliberately marked the fifth anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, an event that helped trigger the war in 1914.

The agreement required Germany to accept responsibility for wartime damage under Article 231, make reparations, surrender territory, and accept military restrictions. It also established the League of Nations framework, although the United States ultimately did not join that organization.

The armistice had already stopped fighting on 11 November 1918, so the treaty did not end active combat on its signing date. Its harsh terms and political consequences remain central to discussions of interwar Europe and the rise of later tensions.
