The Tesla Model X was first delivered to customers in 2015.
Tesla began Model X deliveries on September 29, 2015, when the first six Founders Series vehicles were handed over at a launch event at the company’s Fremont factory. The first Signature edition followed on December 18 of that year. These initial deliveries came after several delays from Tesla’s original plans for an earlier launch.
The Model X had been unveiled as a prototype in February 2012. Tesla’s schedule was affected by the complexity of its distinctive falcon-wing doors, along with engineering and supplier challenges. The production SUV was designed as an electric counterpart to the Model S, sharing much of its underlying technology while adding three rows of seating and SUV practicality.
A common mix-up is confusing the unveiling year with the delivery year: the Model X was shown in 2012, but customers did not receive the first production vehicles until 2015. Tesla produced 507 Model X vehicles in the fourth quarter of 2015, delivering 206 of them.
