The South Korean disaster film Pandora was released in 2016. Directed and written by Park Jung-woo, it centers on a nuclear power plant accident and the workers and residents caught in its aftermath.
The film uses a fictional catastrophe to examine industrial risk, emergency response and the human cost of political decisions. Kim Nam-gil stars as Jae-hyeok, a plant worker who becomes involved in the effort to contain the disaster. The story is not connected to the Greek myth or to the similarly titled films Pandora’s Box.
Pandora belongs to the South Korean disaster-film tradition that combines large-scale destruction with a close focus on families and ordinary workers. Its title invokes the idea of a dangerous container being opened, but the plot specifically concerns nuclear power and a reactor emergency. That distinction helps separate it from both mythological retellings and films about the character Lulu.
