The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was established in 1983.
More precisely, the foundation was created on April 20, 1983, before the Hall had a museum building or any inductees. Atlantic Records co-founder Ahmet Ertegun was the principal founder, assembling a team that included Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner and record executives Seymour Stein and Bob Krasnow.
The foundation’s first induction ceremony did not happen until 1986. That inaugural class included figures such as Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Ray Charles, James Brown, and Jerry Lee Lewis. The delay reflects the difference between establishing the organization and beginning its annual honors.
Another common confusion concerns the museum itself. Cleveland was selected as the permanent home in 1986, construction began later, and the building was dedicated on September 1, 1995. Thus 1995 refers to the museum’s dedication, not the foundation’s creation; 1983 is the correct year for the organization behind the Hall of Fame.
