In what year was the Pasteur Institute founded?

The Pasteur Institute was founded in 1887. It was established by decree on June 4, 1887, after Louis Pasteur’s successful rabies-vaccine work inspired an international fundraising campaign.

The institution was created to combine three goals: treating rabies, researching infectious diseases, and teaching microbiology. Supporters from France and abroad donated more than two million gold francs, allowing construction to begin in Paris.

A common mix-up is the year 1888. The Institute was officially opened on November 14, 1888, by President Sadi Carnot, but its legal foundation dates to 1887. Its first international branch opened in Saigon in 1891.

The Pasteur Institute later became a major center for microbiology, immunology, infectious-disease research, and public health. Its scientists contributed to discoveries including the causes of diphtheria, tetanus, and HIV/AIDS.
