In what year was The Last Supper completed?
Answer
1498
Answer
1498
The Last Supper was completed in 1498.
Leonardo da Vinci worked on the mural in the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan from about 1495 until 1498. He did not paint continuously: his habit of revising, experimenting, and pursuing other commissions made the project unusually slow for a wall painting.
A document from 1497 indicates that the work was nearly finished, while the completion is traditionally dated to 1498. One account gives 9 February 1498 as the completion date. The commission came from Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, who was renovating the convent and intended the area to serve the Sforza family’s mausoleum.
The date is often confused with 1495, the approximate starting year, or 1497, when the painting was already close to finished. The mural’s subject is the moment in John’s Gospel when Jesus announces that one of the apostles will betray him.
