In what year was the Krewe of Rex founded?

The story behind the answer

The Krewe of Rex was founded in 1872.

Rex was organized by New Orleans businessmen during the 1872 Carnival season. Its creation was linked to the planned visit of Grand Duke Alexei Alexandrovich of Russia, who was expected in New Orleans. The founders also hoped that a spectacular public celebration would attract tourism and business to the city after the American Civil War.

Rex quickly became one of New Orleans’ most important Carnival organizations and is known as the “King of Carnival.” Its name comes from the Latin word for “king,” while its motto, “Pro Bono Publico,” means “for the public good.” The krewe’s first parade was held in 1872, although its next parade was canceled in 1875 amid political unrest and federal occupation of the city. That interruption does not change the founding year.
