The jewelry company Pandora was founded in Copenhagen in 1982. Danish goldsmith Per Enevoldsen and his wife, Winnie, established the business, which began as a small family operation selling jewelry.
Pandora later became especially known for charm bracelets and individually purchased charms. This modular approach allowed customers to build a bracelet over time, turning a piece of jewelry into a collection of personal symbols. The company expanded internationally and developed a large retail presence.
The jewelry brand is separate from the Greek myth of Pandora’s jar, although it shares the name. The name also appears in films, music services, fictional worlds, and astronomy, so identifying the subject is important when discussing a date or fact.
Pandora’s modern corporate history is therefore much newer than the ancient story. Its founding in 1982 places the company in late twentieth-century Denmark, decades before its major global expansion.
