In what year was the first web page written?

The story behind the answer

The first web page was written in 1990. Tim Berners-Lee created the first working World Wide Web system at CERN while developing the core technologies that made web publishing possible.

By December 1990, Berners-Lee had built the first web browser, which also functioned as an editor, along with the first web server and the initial versions of HTML and HTTP. The first website, hosted at info.cern.ch, described the Web project itself and explained how users could access documents and create servers. The page was published on 20 December 1990.

A common source of confusion is the year 1989. That was when Berners-Lee submitted his proposal for an information-management system at CERN; it was the conceptual starting point, not the date of the first completed web page. Another frequently cited date is 6 August 1991, when he announced the project publicly on the Usenet newsgroup alt.hypertext.

The Web and the Internet are related but different: the Internet is the underlying network, while the Web is a system of linked documents and resources that runs over it.
