The first Indianapolis 500 was held in 1911 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The inaugural race took place on May 30, 1911, and covered 500 miles over 200 laps. Ray Harroun won in a Marmon Wasp, completing the event in roughly six hours and forty-two minutes.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway had opened in 1909, but the Indianapolis 500 was created two years later as a major long-distance automobile race. It eventually became one of the defining events of the American motorsport calendar.
The race’s connection with Memorial Day weekend became a durable American tradition. Although the race date has shifted under modern scheduling, it remains closely linked with the holiday weekend and its nationwide sports coverage.
