The first-generation Honda Insight was introduced in 1999.
Honda introduced the first Insight in Japan in November 1999. It was a lightweight, highly aerodynamic two-seat liftback and the first production vehicle to use Honda’s Integrated Motor Assist, or IMA, hybrid system. North American availability followed in December 1999.
The first-generation Insight paired a 1.0-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine with a slim electric motor mounted on the crankshaft. Its nickel-metal-hydride battery supplied electric assistance during acceleration and recovered energy through regenerative braking during deceleration.
Its shape was as important as its hybrid hardware. Covered rear wheels, a tapered body, and a drag coefficient of about 0.25 helped the Insight achieve exceptional fuel economy. The first generation remained a two-seater, unlike the larger four-door Insight that Honda introduced for the second generation in 2009.
A frequent mix-up comes from regional timing: Japan received the car in November 1999, North America in December 1999, and Europe in 2000. Despite those staggered launches, 1999 is the correct introduction year.
