In what year was the first complete performance of Wagner’s Ring Cycle held at Bayreuth?

The story behind the answer

The first complete performance of Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle was held at Bayreuth in 1876.

The cycle consists of Das Rheingold, Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung. Wagner designed the four-opera sequence as a continuous mythic drama based largely on German and Norse legendary traditions, especially the Nibelungenlied, the Völsunga saga, and the Poetic Edda.

The performances took place at the newly built Bayreuth Festspielhaus, whose architecture and stage technology were developed to support Wagner’s ideas about music drama. The festival ran from 13 to 17 August 1876, with the complete cycle presented across several days.

The premiere was a major cultural event attended by figures including Kaiser Wilhelm I, King Ludwig II of Bavaria, and the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Wagner later revised parts of the score, but the 1876 Bayreuth festival remains the first complete staging of the cycle.
