The first ATM installed at a bank in Enfield, London, was installed in 1967.
Barclays introduced the machine at its Enfield branch on 27 June 1967. The device was developed by an engineering team led by John Shepherd-Barron at the printing company De La Rue, and actor Reg Varney inaugurated it in a publicity event. It is generally regarded as the world's first ATM.
The original machine was much more limited than modern cash machines. Customers used paper vouchers obtained from a bank teller, and the maximum withdrawal was £10. Early systems therefore did not use the plastic debit cards and magnetic-strip technology familiar today. The four-digit personal identification number, or PIN, became an important part of later versions.
Several rival cash-dispensing machines appeared around the same time, which explains occasional disputes over who invented the ATM. The Barclays–De La Rue system nevertheless came first in the commonly cited banking history, preceding competing systems by days or weeks.
