The current flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina was adopted in 1998.
It was introduced on 4 February 1998 by Carlos Westendorp, the international community’s High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The decision followed the failure of the country’s parliament to agree on a design acceptable to its three constituent peoples.
The flag replaced the white-and-blue design featuring golden fleurs-de-lis, which had served as the state flag after independence in 1992. That earlier flag was closely associated with Bosniaks and was regarded by many Bosnian Serbs and Croats as insufficiently representative.
The present flag uses a blue field, a yellow triangle and seven full white stars plus two partial stars. The triangle is often understood to evoke the country’s shape and its three constituent peoples. A common mix-up is 1992, the year Bosnia and Herzegovina became independent, rather than the adoption year of the current design.
