The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts was established in 1987. It was created after Warhol’s death to advance the visual arts and preserve aspects of his artistic legacy.
The foundation supports contemporary visual-arts organizations and projects through grants. Its work extends beyond maintaining Warhol’s reputation: it also funds artists, exhibitions, publications, and institutions involved in experimental and contemporary practice.
Warhol died in February 1987, and the foundation was established later that year. His estate and the administration of his art have involved several related organizations, including the Andy Warhol Museum and the Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board, so their roles should not be treated as identical.
The foundation is based in New York City and has remained an important source of support for visual-art programs. Its establishment is therefore a posthumous institutional development, not a studio or gallery founded during Warhol’s lifetime.
