The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was founded in 1927.
The organization grew from an idea proposed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio head Louis B. Mayer. He wanted a group that could help resolve labor disputes, improve Hollywood’s public image, and bring together leading figures from different parts of the film industry.
On January 11, 1927, Mayer hosted a formal dinner at Los Angeles’s Ambassador Hotel for 36 industry figures. The group initially used the name International Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, but “International” was soon dropped. The organization’s Articles of Incorporation were filed on May 4, 1927, and Douglas Fairbanks became its first president at a May organizational meeting.
A common mix-up is confusing the Academy’s founding year with the first Academy Awards ceremony. The Academy was established in 1927, while the first Oscars ceremony took place in 1929, honoring films released in 1927 and 1928.
