In what year was Niels Bohr born?

The story behind the answer

Niels Bohr was born in 1885.

He was born on 7 October 1885 in Copenhagen, Denmark, as Niels Henrik David Bohr. He was the second of three children in a scientifically accomplished family: his father, Christian Bohr, was a professor of physiology, while his younger brother Harald became a celebrated mathematician.

Bohr studied at the University of Copenhagen and became one of the central figures in the development of modern physics. His work on atomic structure and quantum theory earned him the 1922 Nobel Prize in Physics. His best-known contribution, the Bohr model, proposed that electrons occupy discrete energy levels around an atomic nucleus.

A common mix-up is confusing Bohr’s birth year with the year of his Nobel Prize or with the dates associated with his atomic model. He received the Nobel Prize in 1922, and his famous atomic model was introduced in 1913. Bohr died in 1962, aged 77.
