Mark Twain’s complete, unexpurgated autobiography finally began publication in 2010.
Twain left behind a large, disordered collection of dictations, manuscripts, and autobiographical writings when he died in 1910. He wanted the material released after his death, and some accounts describe his plan as a century-long delay. Earlier editors published partial or rearranged versions, but none represented the complete text as the Mark Twain Project believed he intended it to appear.
The University of California Press published the first volume of the complete and authoritative edition in 2010, the centenary of Twain’s death. The second volume followed in 2013, and the third and final volume appeared in 2015. The project was edited by scholars at the Bancroft Library’s Mark Twain Project.
The date 1924 refers to an earlier partial edition assembled by Albert Bigelow Paine, not the complete autobiography. The 1959 edition also expanded and rearranged the material but was not the definitive unexpurgated publication. That long editorial history is why 2010 is the key date for the complete edition.
