Answer
44 BC
In what year was Julius Caesar assassinated? Julius Caesar was assassinated in 44 BC, on 15 March, the Ides of March.
A group of Roman senators attacked Caesar during a Senate meeting at the Curia of Pompey in Rome. The conspirators included Marcus Junius Brutus, Gaius Cassius Longinus, and Decimus Junius Brutus Albinus. Ancient accounts say that Caesar was stabbed approximately 23 times, although the conspirators’ motives were political: they claimed that his lifelong dictatorship and growing honors threatened the Roman Republic.
The assassination did not restore republican stability. Mark Antony used Caesar’s funeral to turn public opinion against the conspirators, while Caesar’s will named Octavian as his principal heir and adopted son. The killing helped trigger further civil wars and ultimately contributed to the rise of Augustus and the Roman Empire.
The date is often remembered as the Ides of March, but “44 AD” is impossible in this context: the AD dating system was created centuries later, and Caesar died before the beginning of the Christian era.
