Juan Diego was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 2002.
Juan Diego is the Indigenous Christian associated with the Catholic tradition of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The canonization took place in Mexico City on July 31, 2002, during Pope John Paul II’s fifth visit to Mexico. The event strengthened Juan Diego’s prominence in Mexican Catholic public life.
Some religious quinceañera celebrations draw on Mexican Catholic traditions, including devotion to Guadalupe. Juan Diego is therefore relevant as background to a possible religious theme, although his canonization is not a standard component of every quinceañera.
The date is sometimes confused with the 1531 date traditionally assigned to the Guadalupe apparitions. Those are separate milestones: 1531 belongs to the apparition story, while 2002 marks Juan Diego’s formal canonization by the Catholic Church.
