In what year was John Constable born?

The story behind the answer

John Constable was born in 1776.

He was born on 11 June 1776 in East Bergholt, Suffolk, England, into a prosperous family connected with the grain trade. Constable later became one of Britain’s best-known landscape painters and a leading figure in the Romantic tradition.

Rather than concentrating on grand historical subjects, he repeatedly painted the countryside around his home, especially the Stour Valley and Dedham Vale. His close observation of changing skies, weather, and light helped give landscape painting a more direct and atmospheric character. The area is now popularly known as “Constable Country.”

Constable is sometimes paired with J.M.W. Turner because both transformed British landscape painting, but their styles differed: Turner often pursued luminous abstraction, while Constable emphasized observed places and unsettled weather. Constable died in London in 1837, aged 60.
