In what year was Fyodor Dostoevsky born?
Answer
1821
Answer
1821
Fyodor Dostoevsky was born in 1821.
He was born on 11 November 1821 in Moscow, Russian Empire, into a family connected with the Mariinsky Hospital for the Poor, where his father worked as a doctor. Dostoevsky later became one of Russia’s most influential novelists, known for psychologically intense stories about morality, faith, guilt, freedom, and suffering.
Dostoevsky belonged to the same broad nineteenth-century Russian literary era as Leo Tolstoy and Ivan Turgenev, although their styles and themes differed considerably. His major novels include Crime and Punishment, The Idiot, Demons, and The Brothers Karamazov.
A common mix-up is the date of his birth: Russia used the Julian calendar in the nineteenth century, so some older references give 30 October 1821, while the Gregorian-calendar date is 11 November. Both dates refer to the same birth. Dostoevsky died in Saint Petersburg in 1881, aged 59.
