In what year was Francis Crick born?

The story behind the answer

Francis Crick was born in 1916. He was born Francis Harry Compton Crick on 8 June 1916 in Weston Favell, then a village near Northampton, England.

Crick initially studied physics at University College London and later became one of the central figures in molecular biology. At Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory, he worked with James Watson on the structure of DNA. Their 1953 model helped explain how genetic information could be stored and copied.

Crick’s career extended well beyond the DNA double helix. He helped formulate ideas about the genetic code, including the sequence hypothesis and the wobble hypothesis, and later investigated the biological basis of consciousness. In 1962, he shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Watson and Maurice Wilkins.

A common mix-up is confusing Crick’s birth year with the year of the DNA discovery. Crick was born in 1916, while the Watson–Crick DNA model was proposed in 1953 and the Nobel Prize followed in 1962.
