Final Fantasy VII was released in North America in 1997. The PlayStation version arrived on September 7, 1997, following its Japanese release earlier that year and preceding the game’s European launch.
This release was a major event for the series because Final Fantasy VII was the first numbered Final Fantasy game to use 3D graphics and the first main entry to reach Europe. Square and Sony supported the North American launch with an unusually broad advertising campaign, including television commercials, magazine coverage, a Pepsi promotion, and other merchandise.
The game’s Western release also helped establish Final Fantasy as a mainstream role-playing brand outside Japan. It sold 330,000 copies in its North American debut weekend and passed one million North American copies by early December. Its success expanded the audience for Japanese console RPGs and made characters such as Cloud Strife, Aerith Gainsborough, and Sephiroth globally recognizable.
A common date mix-up comes from the later Windows version, which was released in North America in 1998. That date applies to the PC port, not the original PlayStation release asked about here. The canonical answer for the game’s North American debut is therefore 1997.
