In what year was Facebook launched?

The story behind the answer

In what year was Facebook launched? Facebook was launched in 2004.

Mark Zuckerberg launched the site on February 4, 2004, while he was a student at Harvard. It was initially called “TheFacebook” and was restricted to Harvard College students. Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, Andrew McCollum, and Chris Hughes helped establish and grow the early service.

The idea drew on the tradition of college “face books,” directories containing students’ names and photographs. After its Harvard debut, the service expanded to other universities, first in the United States and Canada. That campus-by-campus rollout helped Facebook build a concentrated early user base before it broadened access.

Readers sometimes confuse the launch year with later milestones. Facebook dropped “the” from its name in 2005, opened registration more widely in 2006, and passed several major growth and investment milestones in 2007. The original launch, however, clearly belongs to 2004.
