In what year was C.S. Lewis born in Belfast, Northern Ireland?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1898.

His birth name was Clive Staples Lewis, and he was born on 29 November 1898. His parents were Albert James Lewis, a solicitor, and Florence Augusta Lewis, who was known as Flora. He had an older brother, Warren Lewis.

Lewis spent much of his childhood in Belfast before being sent to boarding school in England. His Irish upbringing later remained part of his biography, although his adult academic career was based mainly in England.

The year 1898 is sometimes confused with 1899 because Lewis’s birthday falls late in the year. His brother Warren, often called Warnie, was born in 1895 and later became an important companion and biographer.
