In what year was Casa Azul, Frida Kahlo’s family home, built?

The story behind the answer

Casa Azul, Frida Kahlo’s family home, was built in 1904.

The bright blue house in Coyoacán was constructed by Kahlo’s father, Guillermo Kahlo, shortly before Frida’s birth. She was born in the house in 1907 and spent much of her life there.

Casa Azul became especially important after Kahlo’s health deteriorated. Its rooms, courtyard, garden, and personal objects later formed the basis of the Frida Kahlo Museum, which opened to the public in 1958, four years after her death.

The house is commonly called Casa Azul because of its vivid blue exterior. Visitors sometimes confuse its construction date with the opening date of the museum: the building dates from 1904, while the museum began admitting the public in 1958.
