In what year was Carhartt founded?

The story behind the answer

Carhartt was founded in 1889.

Hamilton Carhartt established Hamilton Carhartt & Company in Detroit, Michigan, during America’s industrial expansion. The business initially focused on durable clothing for railroad workers, whose jobs demanded garments that could withstand friction, dirt, and long hours around locomotives and track equipment.

The company began on a very small scale, reportedly using two sewing machines and a half-horsepower electric motor. After consulting railroad workers, Carhartt refined its workwear designs and built its reputation around practical construction rather than fashion. Its early motto was “Honest value for an honest dollar.”

A common mix-up is 1884, the year Hamilton Carhartt moved to Detroit and operated a furnishing business. That was part of his earlier commercial history, not the founding year of the Carhartt clothing company. By 1910, the company had expanded into mills and sewing facilities in several American and Canadian cities.
