In what year was Aston Martin founded?

Aston Martin was founded in 1913.

The company began as Bamford & Martin, founded by Robert Bamford and Lionel Martin. The pair initially sold Singer cars and operated from premises in London, but they soon decided to build vehicles of their own. The Aston Martin name combined Martin’s surname with Aston Hill, a famous hill-climb venue near Aston Clinton in Buckinghamshire where Lionel Martin competed.

The first car carrying the Aston Martin name was created when Martin fitted a four-cylinder Coventry-Simplex engine to an Isotta Fraschini chassis. Although the business was established in 1913, the First World War delayed manufacturing. Martin joined the Admiralty and Bamford served with the Army Service Corps.

The date is sometimes confused with 1914 or 1915 because early company milestones followed the founding. Aston Martin’s first purpose-built car was produced in 1915, but the firm’s foundation date remains 1913. Later, David Brown’s ownership from 1947 shaped the famous DB model line.
