She was the daughter of the Romantic poet Lord Byron and Anne Isabella Milbanke, later known as Lady Byron. Her parents separated soon after her birth, and Ada was raised primarily by her mother. Lady Byron encouraged Ada's education in mathematics and science, partly because she wanted to steer her away from what she regarded as her father's volatile artistic temperament.

Ada later became associated with Charles Babbage, whose proposed Analytical Engine was a mechanical general-purpose computer. In notes published in 1843, she described how the machine could follow a sequence of operations to calculate Bernoulli numbers. This work is why she is often called the first computer programmer, although historians sometimes qualify that description because the machine itself was never completed.

Ada died in 1852, aged 36, but her 1815 birth year places her firmly in the early Victorian period and the first generation of computing pioneers.
