The Pennsylvania commission for the United States semiquincentennial announced plans to bury the capsule in Philadelphia on July 4, 2026. It is scheduled for unearthing on July 4, 2276, exactly 250 years later.
That future date will mark the 500th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The capsule is designed to connect the 250th-anniversary observance with a much longer tradition of preserving memories for future generations.
The project is separate from the 2026 national celebration itself. The burial belongs to the semiquincentennial, while the planned opening would coincide with the United States' quincentennial, or 500th anniversary, of the Declaration.
