Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart completed his opera Don Giovanni in 1787.
Mozart wrote the opera to an Italian libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte, who also collaborated with him on The Marriage of Figaro and Così fan tutte. Mozart completed the score in October 1787, and Don Giovanni received its premiere at Prague’s Estates Theatre on 29 October that year. A revised version was later staged in Vienna in 1788.
The opera combines comedy, drama, and supernatural elements in the story of the notorious nobleman Don Giovanni. Its final scene includes the statue of the Commendatore, who arrives to demand that Giovanni repent. Mozart designated the work an opera buffa, although its dark subject matter and serious scenes give it a broader dramatic character. The autograph score is dated 28 October 1787, one day before the Prague premiere.
