Tiger Woods won his first Masters in 1997.
The victory at Augusta National was Woods’s first major championship and one of the most dominant performances in golf history. At 21 years old, he finished at 18 under par and won by 12 strokes, setting records for both the youngest Masters champion at the time and the largest margin of victory.
Woods entered the tournament as a highly accomplished young professional after turning pro in 1996. His commanding performance immediately established him as golf’s next global superstar. He became the first player of Asian or African American descent to win the Masters.
The 1997 title was the first of Woods’s five Masters victories. He later won at Augusta in 2001, 2002, 2005, and 2019. The 2019 victory was especially notable because it marked his first major championship win in 11 years, following years of injuries and back surgeries.
