In what year did the Wright brothers begin powered-flight tests at Huffman Prairie?

The story behind the answer

The Wright brothers began powered-flight tests at Huffman Prairie in 1904.

After their successful flights at Kitty Hawk in December 1903, Wilbur and Orville needed a nearby site for regular experimentation. They chose Huffman Prairie, an open field northeast of Dayton, Ohio, close to their bicycle business and family home.

The 1904 tests were difficult. The Flyer often struggled to take off in the field’s lighter winds, so the brothers constructed a wooden derrick and weight-assisted launching system. They gradually improved their technique and aircraft through repeated flights.

By 1905, the Wrights had developed the Flyer III, their first practical airplane. Huffman Prairie is sometimes confused with Kitty Hawk, but the locations served different purposes: Kitty Hawk hosted the breakthrough 1903 flights, while Huffman Prairie became the main Dayton testing ground from 1904 onward.
