The United States Semiquincentennial Commission began under its founding law in 2016.
The commission was created by the United States Semiquincentennial Commission Act of 2016. Its purpose was to prepare for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, which would arrive ten years later in 2026.
The timing mattered because large national anniversaries require long planning periods. The commission could coordinate with federal agencies, state and local governments, museums, historical organizations, educators, and community groups well before the anniversary year.
The year 2016 is sometimes confused with other dates in the America250 story. A Philadelphia nonprofit called USA250 was established in 2011, while a state-level Pennsylvania commission was formed in 2018. Those milestones concern related planning efforts, but they are not the year in which Congress established the federal semiquincentennial commission.
