The Suez Canal officially opened in 1869, linking the Mediterranean Sea with the Red Sea through Egypt. Its opening created a shorter maritime route between Europe and Asia by avoiding the long voyage around Africa’s Cape of Good Hope.
The canal was built by the Suez Canal Company under the direction of French diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps. Construction began in 1859 and involved large-scale excavation through the Isthmus of Suez. The formal opening ceremony took place on 17 November 1869, with international guests and celebrations in Egypt.
The modern canal is a sea-level waterway without locks, unlike the Panama Canal. Egypt nationalized the canal in 1956, and the Suez Crisis followed when Britain, France, and Israel attacked Egypt. The canal remains one of the world’s most important shipping routes and was expanded in stages to accommodate larger vessels.
