In what year did the poet Yosa Buson die?
Answer
1784
Answer
1784
Yosa Buson died in 1784.
Buson was born in 1716 and became one of Japan’s most celebrated Edo-period poets and painters. He studied haikai poetry, traveled through northern Honshū, and later settled in Kyoto, where he worked under the poetic name Yosa, taken from his mother’s birthplace in Tango Province.
Buson is especially important because he united literary and visual art. His poetry is known for sharply observed images, while his paintings helped develop haiga, the combination of haiku-related poetry and painting. Alongside Matsuo Bashō and Kobayashi Issa, he is commonly counted among the greatest poets of the Edo period.
Buson died in Kyoto on January 17, 1784, at the age of 68, and was buried at Konpuku-ji temple. The year can occasionally cause confusion because some accounts give dates using Japan’s traditional calendar, but 1784 is the standard Gregorian-calendar year used in modern English biographies.
