In what year did the Mercedes-Benz brand form from the merger of Benz and Daimler? The brand formed in 1926.
Benz & Cie. and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft first signed an Agreement of Mutual Interest on 1 May 1924. The arrangement allowed them to coordinate while continuing as separate companies, but economic pressures after World War I encouraged a full corporate merger.
That formal merger took place on 28 June 1926, creating Daimler-Benz AG. The new company adopted Mercedes-Benz as its automobile brand, combining the Mercedes name associated with Daimler vehicles and Benz’s pioneering automotive heritage.
“Daimler” and “Mercedes-Benz” are therefore not interchangeable names for the original event. Daimler-Benz was the merged company, while Mercedes-Benz was the marque used on its cars. The Mercedes name itself came from Mercedes Jellinek, daughter of businessman and racing patron Emil Jellinek, whose involvement helped popularize the name in the early 1900s.
