The English Wikipedia reached its one-millionth article in 2006. The milestone was passed on March 1, 2006, when Jordanhill railway station became the millionth article.
This achievement came just over five years after Wikipedia launched in January 2001. The English edition grew through thousands of volunteer contributions, the creation of topic-focused editing groups, and automated or semi-automated work such as the Rambot project, which added articles about United States towns using census data.
The millionth article was a symbolic milestone rather than a claim that every article had equal length or quality. Wikipedia's article count includes short entries, and editors continually create, merge, redirect, expand, and delete pages. As a result, counts can change and milestone totals are snapshots of a living encyclopedia.
A nearby milestone is often mistaken for this one: the English Wikipedia passed two million articles in September 2007. The wider Wikipedia project, counting all language editions, also had separate milestones, so “one millionth article” must be understood as referring specifically to the English edition.
