The current Louis Armstrong Stadium opened in 2018. It debuted for the 2018 US Open as a new replacement for the earlier Louis Armstrong Stadium, which had been demolished after the 2016 tournament.
The new stadium officially opened on August 22, 2018, with an exhibition involving John McEnroe, Patrick McEnroe, James Blake, and Michael Chang. Its first official US Open match followed on August 27, when Kaia Kanepi defeated world No. 1 Simona Halep in the first round.
The venue was built as part of a major redevelopment of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. It has about 14,000 seats, a retractable roof, and natural ventilation—an unusual combination for a large tennis stadium.
The year 2018 refers to the current building, not the original stadium. The earlier Louis Armstrong Stadium had opened in 1978 after the former Singer Bowl site was adapted for tennis. That older structure served the US Open for decades before being replaced.
